Have Questions? We’ve Got Answers.
Creating a secure outdoor space can help your dog expel all that excess energy, leading to a calmer demeanor indoors and bringing you peace of mind. But what types of dog fences are there, and what’s best for your furry pet? Keep reading to find out.
Pet Playgrounds is a real physical dog fence kit. It is NOT an electric fence. It comes with all of the components you will need to create a safe and secure play space for your dog. Unlike invisible electric fences that only attempt to keep your dog in your yard, our physical dog fence stops predators – like coyotes – from entering your enclosure. Our product has two main features that separate it from all other fencing systems.
Anti-Climb Feature: Unlike traditional rigid fences, our fence is a mesh-based fencing system that moves. That means dogs can’t use our fence like a ladder to climb over, the way regular fencing systems allow dogs to escape. When a dog tries to climb over, it simply flexes so no dog can get a grip.
Anti-Dig Feature: Even if you have a physical fence, dogs can dig under your fence to escape. We have eliminated this possibility by creating a dig guard that prevents dogs from digging under your fence. It is a strong steel mesh layer that is secured into the ground using our ultra-hold ground stakes.
Providing your dog with a secure outdoor space not only enhances their physical health but also improves their mental well-being. A properly contained yard allows your dog to explore and play safely, reducing anxiety and destructive behaviors. Plus, knowing that your dog is safe from external threats and unable to escape gives you the peace of mind you deserve.
When a dog tries to climb over, it simply flexes so no dog can get a grip. Even if you have a physical fence, dogs can dig under your fence to escape. We have eliminated this possibility by creating a dig guard that prevents dogs from digging under your fence. Dogs know that spicy and bitter are not tasty flavors. They are associated with unsafe foods in the wild—such as a bad piece of fruit or an inedible plant—and as a result, dogs know to avoid bitter things.
But why do some dogs try to escape from the yard in the first place?
Understanding Your Dog’s Motivations
Loneliness and Indoor Preference
Some dogs are just lonely outside. They’d rather be indoors with you. While there are good reasons to give dogs some outdoor time during the day, ensure they get indoor time if possible. They won’t have the spare time on their paws to work on their next great escape.
Need for Enrichment
Lonely dogs most often look for outside enrichment. They may have spotted or smelled a friend nearby they know they can get to. If a friendly dog sees a potential new friend, it might bolt. Animal instincts are a real thing.
High Energy Levels
While invisible fences work better for some dogs, they won’t stop any excited dog from chasing a rabbit. Particularly those dogs with too much energy! A dog with extra energy will be more likely to want to get out, and an invisible fence won’t keep them inside your yard nor prevent hazards from entering the yard.
Preventing Escapes
- Flexible Fencing: When a dog tries to climb over, it simply flexes so no dog can get a grip.
- Dig Guards: Even if you have a physical fence, dogs can dig under your fence to escape. We have eliminated this possibility by creating a dig guard that prevents dogs from digging under your fence.
- Taste Deterrents: Dogs know that spicy and bitter are not tasty flavors. They are associated with unsafe foods in the wild—such as a bad piece of fruit or an inedible plant—and as a result, dogs know to avoid bitter things.
By understanding why dogs might feel the need to escape and combining this knowledge with effective physical barriers, you can keep your furry friend safe and content within your yard.

Common Methods Dogs Use to Escape From Yards
Understanding how dogs typically escape from yards can help you choose a more effective containment strategy. Here are some of the most common escape methods:
1. Climbing
Dogs are surprisingly good climbers, especially when it comes to chain link fences. The evenly spaced slots allow dogs to place their paws and climb over the top. This method is particularly common among athletic breeds and highly motivated pets.
2. Digging
Many dogs will dig their way out, especially under chain link fences, which are often flexible. A dog can easily dig a hole beneath the fence and squeeze through the gap.
3. Squeezing Through Gaps
Small or agile dogs can sometimes squeeze through gaps in fencing. If your fence has wide picket spacing, smaller dogs may find it easy to wiggle their way out.
4. Jumping
Some dogs have an impressive vertical leap. Even fences that seem tall enough might not be a match for a dog with enough energy and determination.
5. Chewing
Dogs with strong jaws can sometimes chew through fences made from weaker materials like wood. This can also be an issue with certain plastic fences.
6. Opening Gates
Intelligent dogs can learn how to manipulate simple gate latches. Gates that don’t have complex or secure locks can be easily opened by a clever dog, providing an easy route for escape.
By identifying how your dog is escaping, you can better tailor your fencing solution to address these behaviors and keep your pet safe and secure.
Traditional fences (like chain link fences) act like ladders – and actually help dogs climb over. Our Dog Fence eliminates that possibility. The strength prevents your best friend from chewing through and the flexibility stops your dog from climbing over.
Addressing Fence-Patrolling Behavior
Dogs that patrol up and down the fences are often looking for other dogs or people who are getting too close. ‘Too close’ often means ‘walking on the sidewalk adjacent to the home,’ indicating that these dogs have a strong urge to escape.
To mitigate this behavior, you’ll want to get a fence that your dog can’t see through or over. Opt for a tall fence they can’t see over while on their hind legs, and ensure it’s a solid fence instead of one with posts far enough apart that your dog can see passers-by.
While this won’t eliminate the problem entirely, as the dog can still smell and hear the people and animals outside, it will significantly reduce the distractions and help manage the behavior.
Many types of breeds love digging, especially terriers, beagles and huskies. Unlike traditional fences, our fence does not end when it meets the ground, it keeps on going…for about a foot. Our fence comes with a dig guard, which is created by using a strong 19 gauge steel mesh layer that is secured to the ground with ultra-hold ground stakes. Take a look at the video below because words can not accurately describe how our dig guard works.
Understanding why your dog is trying to escape is crucial before investing in a fence. By observing their behavior closely, particularly during escape attempts, you can pinpoint the underlying cause.
Observe and Analyze Behavior
- Behavioral Cues: Watch for signs like restlessness or agitation. Take note of any specific times or situations when your dog attempts to flee.
- Companionship: If your dog often seems lonely, they might be seeking social interaction. Dogs are social animals and may attempt to escape to find companionship, especially if left alone for extended periods.
Needs and Desires
- Outdoor vs. Indoor Time: Balance between indoor and outdoor time is essential. Dogs that spend too much time alone outdoors may try to escape out of sheer boredom. Ensure they get enough attention and interaction indoors to curb their desire to wander.
Environmental Stimuli
- Potential Attractants: Your dog’s senses are highly sharp. If they smell or see another animal or something intriguing outside the yard, their natural curiosity might compel them to explore. This is especially true if they notice another dog or a potential playmate nearby.
- Energy Levels: High-energy dogs often require more exercise and stimulation. A lack of physical activity can lead them to seek ways out of the yard to burn off excess energy. Consider more rigorous play sessions or longer walks.
Fence Types and Effectiveness
- Physical Barriers: While invisible fences might deter some dogs, they aren’t foolproof. Highly energetic or excited dogs might still push past these barriers, especially if chasing something enticing like a rabbit.
- Adequate Enclosures: Ensure that your fencing solution is robust enough to contain your dog. A determined dog might not be stopped by an invisible fence, so physical barriers should be tall and secure enough to prevent escapes.
By taking the time to understand your dog’s specific needs and behaviors, you can choose the most effective way to keep them safe and contained within your yard.
Not at all! In just a short time the Dig Guard will almost disappear into the grass and become one with the soil. This zen-like effect will allow you to mow right over the top of it and right up next to the fence.
We have designed our fence to be as unobtrusive as possible. Just like a window screen, when you step back 10-15 feet you can barely even see our fence. If you have lots of trees in your backyard, you can make our fence even more invisible by using your existing trees as post replacements. Check out the fence below. Can you even see it? Why Choose Pet Playgrounds’ Non-Electric Fences?
Our non-electric dog fences are specifically designed to offer the best of both worlds: safety and practicality. Unlike electric or invisible fences, our solutions don’t rely on shocking your pet to keep them contained, making them more humane and cost-effective in the long run. With anti-climb and anti-dig features, our fences ensure your pet stays safe within your yard, while offering flexibility to handle a variety of unique situations.Whether you opt for our standard or MAX strength fences, you can trust that Pet Playgrounds delivers the best non-electric fence solutions on the market.Choose your height and order your dog fence. Not at all!
When you order a 6 foot fence (for example), the finished height of your fence will be 6 feet tall. The dig guard is an addition to the height of your fence.
You can add gates to your Kit when you place your order. We offer 5 foot wide gates (which is perfect for most commercial lawn mowers), 8 foot wide gates and 14 foot driveway gates. In some cases you may decide to use your garage as part of your enclosure and may not need a gate, so we give you the flexibility to decide whether you want a gate and how many you want.
Keeping your furry friend safe and secure requires a bit more than just a sturdy gate. Here are some effective strategies to ensure your dog stays within the boundaries of your garden:
Install the Gate Correctly: If the ground allows, consider installing the gate to swing towards the dog. This setup ensures that if your dog jumps against the gate, they will push it shut rather than prying it open.
Secure Lockable Latches: Opt for gate latches that can be locked. Some dogs are clever enough to figure out how to nudge an unlatched gate open. A lockable latch prevents this, providing an additional layer of security.
Choose Durable Latching Mechanisms: High-quality latches with magnetic latching actions offer extra security. These mechanisms ensure that once the gate is closed, it remains firmly shut and difficult for your dog to manipulate.
Regular Maintenance: Periodically check the gate and latch for any signs of wear and tear. Ensuring everything is in good working order can prevent accidental escapes.
By following these steps, you can help ensure that your dog stays safely contained within your garden.
Our 1,100 pound break strength Polypropylene Mesh uses a patented process that makes it both incredibly strong and remarkably flexible. The strength prevents your best friend from chewing through and the flexibility stops your dog from climbing over. Learn more about the components we use.
Our Rubber Coated Welded Steel Wire Mesh is the main component of our dig guard. At 1,800 PSI of break strength, it’s nearly impossible for animals to bite, rip, or tear through. It is easily secured in place by using our ultra-hold ground stakes. Learn more about the components we use.
How does this compare to chain link? Will this hold up to my dog?
Chain link fences can only withstand about 1,500psi. That’s about half as strong as our Pet Playgrounds fence. Wood fences are even weaker – they can only withstand about 700psi.
A wooden fence is made of whole, tall slat boards. They are typically 6 feet tall and provide a good amount of privacy. However, they can be expensive and require maintenance to avoid rotting. Some dogs may also be able to chew through them, making them less durable for pet owners.
More importantly, our fence isn’t just strong – it’s flexible which makes it so incredibly unique. This flexibility not only enhances durability but also provides additional safety for pets, unlike traditional rigid fences.
Understanding Dog Containment
When considering fencing options for dog containment, it’s crucial to examine the structure and durability. Traditional picket fences, for example, are not as tall as standard wooden fences and have larger spaces between slats. While they are less expensive, their durability is somewhat compromised. A particularly strong dog may be able to break through these gaps, presenting a containment challenge.
Maintenance Considerations
Similar to wooden fences, picket fences require consistent maintenance to avoid rotting and ensure longevity. Over time, lack of upkeep could weaken the fence, making it less effective in containing pets.
Strength and Flexibility Combined
In contrast, our Rubber Coated Welded Steel Wire Mesh not only offers superior strength but also flexibility. This combination is rare and ensures that the fence can withstand significant force without breaking or tearing. This makes it an excellent choice for containing even the most energetic and strong dogs.
By understanding the strengths and potential weaknesses of different fencing options, you can make a more informed decision to keep your furry friends safe and secure.
Pros and Cons of Chain Link Fences for Dogs
While chain link fences are durable and weather-resistant, making them a long-lasting option, they do have some drawbacks. They can be expensive to install, and they don’t provide much in the way of privacy. If your primary concern is containing your dog, a chain link fence will do the job but may not be the best option if you’re also looking for strength and flexibility.
Our fence, on the other hand, offers superior strength and flexibility, making it a more reliable choice for pet owners concerned about their dog’s safety and containment.
Understanding the Perimeter Loop Fence Layout
A perimeter loop fence layout is a fencing design where the fence encircles the entire property. This includes encompassing the front of the house, thereby granting your dog access to both the front and backyard areas.
When is a Perimeter Loop Fence Layout Suitable?
- Full Property Access: Ideal for those who want their pet to freely roam across the entire property, rather than being confined to a specific area.
- Property Size and Shape: Suitable for larger properties where the perimeter loop can provide ample space for activity.
- Regulations and Restrictions: Not all neighborhoods or cities allow for such extensive fencing. It’s essential to check local zoning laws and homeowners’ association guidelines.
- Fence Types: Some fence types might be more practical or aesthetically pleasing for a perimeter loop. Chain-link fences, for example, are often used for their durability and cost-effectiveness, while wooden or vinyl fences provide more privacy and aesthetic value.
A perimeter loop layout ensures maximum space utilization for your pet’s enjoyment but requires careful consideration of local regulations and the type of fencing used.

What do most people get? The most popular Pet Playgrounds Dog Fence Kit is a 5 foot tall / 200 linear foot Kit with a standard 5×5 gate. That would cost you $1,850 for a DIY Kit. If you were to finance this dog fence kit, it would cost customers with good credit $121 a month through Affirm.
What about installation? Installation costs $6 per linear foot and $175 per gate. So, in our example installation would cost you an additional $1,375. Your total cost for our kit and installation would be $3,225 or $163 a month through Affirm.
Choosing the Right Fence for Your Dog
Before you start measuring your yard, it’s crucial to take a moment to consider your dog’s behavior. Each dog is different, so the right fence choice is essential. Does your dog love to dig or jump? Is it a small breed with escape artist tendencies or a larger dog needing more space? Understanding your dog’s unique behavior will help you make an informed decision on the best type of fence for your needs.
What’s the next step? Measure your yard. It’s easy. Simply walk around the proposed play space and count your steps. Walk normally – not heel to toe. Then multiply your steps by 2.5. Now you know how many linear feet you need to order.

With your dog’s behavior in mind, choosing which fence is best for you can be more accessible. Whether you opt for a traditional wooden fence, a chain-link fence, or a more modern invisible fence, making sure it suits your dog’s habits is key. For instance, if your dog is a jumper, a taller fence is necessary. If digging is an issue, you might need to consider an underground barrier.
Taking these factors into account will ensure that your fence not only keeps your dog safe but also provides a comfortable and enjoyable environment for them to play and relax.
The 1st step is to measure your yard. We ask customers to measure their own yard because it’s so incredibly easy and we are able to save roughly $450 on every Dog Fence we sell. Every penny we save is passed on to you.

Our fence works great for commercial applications like community dog parks and pet hotels. Our fence is incredibly popular for community dog parks because thousands of dollars can be saved by having volunteers assemble our easy-to-install DIY Kit. We recommend a 5-foot tall kit with a minimum of 300 linear feet for a dog park with 4 gates. This will allow you to create 2 separate play spaces (one for large dogs, one for small dogs) with a security gate system so dogs can’t run out when a new dog is entering the dog park.
Since commercial applications do not typically use a building to complete one side of your fence, you will need to add the free standing enclosure option, during the checkout process which will provide you with all of the components you will need to assemble your dog park.
You can purchase your commercial dog park and all the necessary components right here or learn more about how our fence can be used for commercial applications. Still have questions? Schedule a phone call with a Dog Fence Expert or give us a call right now at 1-800-985-9202.
For the Small Dogs
Tiny dogs are sweet and easy to keep in the home as lap dogs, but every pet, no matter its size, loves to play outside. When considering fencing options, it’s crucial to ensure the safety and enjoyment of your small dogs. Avoid a chain link or fence with diamond-shaped wire, as the dog can scale the wall, which isn’t recommended for their safety. Instead, opt for a fence that provides a secure environment without the risk of climbing.
With our recommended setup, small dogs will have their own designated area to play safely, ensuring they stay secure while enjoying the outdoors. This separation also prevents any potential issues with larger dogs, making the environment enjoyable for all pets.

Can I get a refund if my dog escapes?
There are so many variables that it would be impossible to effectively offer a warranty or a guarantee that your dog won’t escape. For example, if someone left the gate open by accident your dog would be able to escape. If you have a hurricane and a tree falls on your fence, your fence might be temporarily damaged and your dog could escape. In Canada, our customers have seen bears test the fence and although our fence is incredibly strong and flexible it was not designed to withstand a family of hungry bears looking for food. For these reasons and more we don’t offer a warranty or a guarantee but we will work with you fix any issues that you may have and repairs are rare, simple and not expensive
What you will get is the most reliable and affordable REAL dog fencing system in the world. We suggest ordering either a 6 foot tall MAX or a 7 foot MAX dog fence if your dog is a Houdini escape artist that is a jumper and a chewer. You never know what a dog can do our 12 years of engineering the Max strength has made it over 99% effective for thousands of fences. You don’t want to make the cure worse than the disease,… we could make the fences 8 feet tall with 4 layers and arms facing in to create an over hang, where do you draw the line with cost and effectiveness. We have found in many cases larger areas get less serious challenges because often dogs accept the space as a territory to protect. Please call us if you unsure which fence to choose and also keep in mind our weakest 2 layer can be added to and tuned into our strongest three layer easily at any time...

Invisible wireless dog fences just don’t work. Studies show that they fail nearly 30% of the time. Nearly a quarter of our customers are dog parents that initially tried to use an invisible electric fence – only to find out that it didn’t work for their dog.
At low levels, the shock is too weak to stop your dog from leaving your yard to investigate nearby wildlife or another dog, and at high levels, the dog may become scared or aggressive. Learn more about the dangers of invisible wireless fences and shock collars.
Additionally, consider your dog’s behavior and energy levels when choosing a fence. Highly energetic dogs, for instance, are more likely to chase after rabbits or other animals, and an invisible fence won’t stop them. This often leads to frustration for both the dog and the owner.
Moreover, a physical fence provides true freedom for your dog to play safely within your yard while giving you peace of mind. Unlike invisible fences, a physical barrier effectively prevents hazards, such as stray animals or neighborhood pets, from entering your yard.
Thus, investing in a physical dog fence not only ensures the safety and security of your furry friend but also addresses behavioral and environmental factors that invisible fences simply cannot.

Yes. Typically, coyotes enter fenced in yards by climbing over traditional chain link and wooden fences. Our fence prevents dogs, coyotes and other predators from climbing over your fence and entering your Pet Playgrounds Play Space because our fence physically move.
Other fences act like ladders that actually help coyotes climb over your fence, however our fence is flexible so coyotes can not get a grip to climb over. Watch our short video to learn how our fence can protect your dogs from wild coyotes.

Awesome! We love customers that want to expand their fence or protect other areas. If you don’t need an entire kit but instead need certain components you can purchase them separately at petplaygroundsmore.com. Please note that these accessories were designed for existing Pet Playgrounds customers. Many parts require items that are included in our dog fence kits.
Our 5 and 6 foot dog fences require a post every 20 feet, and our 6 foot MAX and 7 foot MAX fences require a post every 15 feet. This is VERY different from traditional fencing systems that require a post every 8 feet.
Your Kit comes with one Start post, one Stop (or end) post and two corner posts. If you use one side of your house to complete the fence (so essentially you are purchasing 3 sides for your fence – not 4), you will not have order anything extra. This is common and is default selection is perfect for 95% of customers. If you are creating an advanced layout (for example, a free standing enclosure) then you will need order 2 extra corner posts.
Our full installation video can be seen at petplaygrounds.com/install. If you have questions call our support line at (866) 985-8547
Nope. Our standard 5 and 6 foot fences come with 2 layers, and our 6 and 7 foot MAX Strength fences come with 3 layers. The first layer that you will install is a metal mesh layer that functions as both the dig guard and the chew guard. It is 4 foot tall, even when you purchase a 5 or 6 foot tall fence. The reason for this is that the second layer, which is the polypropylene mesh is installed right on top of this layer, and needs to be at the top of the fence by itself to allow the fence to physically move. This is what makes our fence so difficult to climb.

The Potential Risks of Not Having a Secure Fence for Your Dog
1. Safety Hazards for Your Dog
Without a secure fence, your dog is exposed to numerous dangers. They could easily wander into the street, risking accidents with vehicles. Additionally, they might get lost or fall prey to wildlife.
2. Risk to Other Pets and People
An unsecured dog can pose a risk to other pets in your neighborhood. Even the friendliest dogs can become territorial or scared, leading to potential altercations. Furthermore, neighbors or children playing nearby might be at risk of unexpected encounters.
3. Impact on Local Environment
Dogs have a natural instinct to explore, dig, and sometimes destroy. This can lead to them damaging local flora or disrupting fauna habitats. A secure fence helps minimize these impacts, keeping the local environment safer and more intact.
